Dr. Richard J. Paulson is the Director of USC Fertility, and has been with the practice since 1986. He is also a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Chief of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine.
He has been rated one of “The Best Doctors in America” continuously since 1994 and is one of the pioneers of Assisted Reproduction in the USA. Dr. Paulson was part of the team that reported the first successful birth after embryo cryopreservation in the United States, in 1986, the year that he established the USC Fertility practice at USC. He has been the Medical Director of the USC Fertility practice every since. Under his leadership, the USC Fertility program established a number of important “firsts” in the field: First observation that egg donation can be used to produce pregnancies in women of advanced reproductive age (1990), the importance of endometrial receptivity in embryo implantation (1990), the utilization of the natural cycle in IVF (1991), first report of the utilization of GnRH antagonists in IVF (1991), first series of pregnancies in women over the age of 50 (1993). There followed landmark investigations evaluating the absorption of steroids after vaginal administration (1995-2001), and the utilization of oocyte cryopreservation for fertility preservation (2006). The program continues to play a major leadership role in the field of Infertility Care and the Fellowship is among the most competitive in the USA.
Dr. Paulson has previously served as president of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the Pacific Coast Reproductive Society, the Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and the Los Angeles Obstetrical and Gynecological Society. He is also a past examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Currently, he is the current Editor-in-Chief of “Fertility & Sterility Reports” and past Deputy Editor of “Fertility and Sterility.” His major research interest is reproductive aging with a particular emphasis on human embryo implantation and fertility preservation.
